Could the parking pawl be stuck or broken? Was it rolling when shifted into park with a heavy load? On some GM transmissions the parking pawl is the first thing installed in the transmission case before anything else, so everything needs to be removed to work on the pawl. Chrysler products might be similar. Look for an assembly diagram on line to see how yours is assembled.
With 224K miles you might as well rebuild the transmission while it is apart or swap it with a rebuilt unit.
