The problem with that is the fields are wound to work at a particular voltage. If you run a 6V generator at 12V, the amount of heat dissipated in the fields goes up four times! Twice the volts times twice the amps means four times the heat. Those sealed, non-ventilated generators will not stand up long like that. A good automotive electrical shop can put the correct fields in it to work at 12V.
BTW, if it's a Delco unit, the fastest way to tell if it's 6 or 12 volt is to look at the model/serial number tag. Red tag -- 6V. Black tag -- 12V.
