Changing the filter on those is not easy. you definitely need the manual. I have had a 971 for around fifteen years. I use it a fair amount to rake and bale hay. For the first ten years I used it very little. I changed the oil soon after I got it being sure to use the correct oil for the clutch packs. It was around eight years and maybe twenty hours before I changed it again. It was very dirty and milky looking. It is kept under cover nearly all the time, so I am sure that it got bad mainly from moisture getting in from condensation. You will certainly be wise to change yours.
