I was at MCAS Cherry Point, NC in 1956 when Hurricane Ione went right over the top of us.
It was just like they say, it blew like heck from one direction for a day or so, was dead calm for an hour or two, and began blowing from the other direction. In a brick barracks, we were secure.
I was a Corporal at the time, and for us troops in the barracks, the whole thing was a three day beer bust and poker marathon. Supposed to be no booze or gambling in the barracks, but under those conditions the officers and Staff NCO's chose to look the other way. As I would have after I moved a ways up the ladder.
