If it is too thick to circulate through the radiator, it will overheat.
You could try removing the thermostat so water will circulate freely, start it up, bring the RPM up some, open the drain valve and feed water in with the hose. Once it is circulating, add some Dawn dish soap, let it circulate then flush again, may need several repeats. Once flushed put the thermostat back in, run water only for a test period, see what happens. If diesel don't run it under heavy load until the proper coolant is replaced.
If it was an overdose of stop leak, the leak will probably return but the goo will be gone.
If it is oil the problem will slowly return.
If overheating continues it could be a head gasket or cracked head.
Is there any evidence of water in the oil? Condensation under the oil cap, in the dipstick tube?
Typical sources of oil in the coolant are failed oil cooler, head gasket leaking where oil galley to the rockers passes through, cracked block in rare cases.
