I had a 1979 4230DC and it had no turbo with some kind of power shifting capacity....at the end of a row you could drop a gear with the lever movement only and pick it back up when the turn was completed. I really liked that. 4 range 3 gears as I recall....been 10 years or so since I sold it. Maybe 3 range-4 gears.
In looking up specs, the 4430 was the same 400 cu in engine with a turbo and 25 more hp. The front pulley had a dual V belt sheave I assume for dual belt applications when in the higher hp application. The exhaust manifold outlet was 4" to accept the turbo and was necked down to about inch and a half on the output pipe of the muffler.......An engine is an air pump.....let it breathe. I took it off and put a 4" chrome straight pipe on it. Soundguard cab mitigated the noise somewhat but talk about a parade queen, all new paint, interior, and rubber, flags flying all over.
Reason I bought the 4230 over the 4430 was that the 4230 had 3900 original hours mowing grass and was tight. The 4430 sitting adjacent to it was close to 10,000 hrs, loose, and $2k more. I didn't need the extra hp.
