Helping a friend that now has his families 1953 John Deere model 40. Major problem is steering is almost inop. I have removed or disconnected most assemblies and components that are part of the steering assembly. In the John deere parts manual item #5 on page 50-5 steering shaft and item #32 on page 55-4 spindle, upper are all that is left connected. Still cannot get any rotating motion when applying an 18" pipe wrench. It is a wide front end and he did say someone may have hit something with a front wheel while driving, fence post or tree. Question is, what is bent or seized in the steering pedestal and how do I get things out/ disassembled? This is the last item for making it a working tractor again. Thanks for all insights or info.

The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
