The use of your WiFi and phone is typically called WiFi Calling. Most providers have it but not all phones do. My previous phone could not do it but I wanted it on my latest phone, a MOTO. The phone easily goes from Cell to WiFi and I never experience any problem. In most cases, the WiFi connection is no big deal since they are all pretty much unlimited minutes for talk and text. Where it really works well is when one travels. When I was in Ireland, a few months ago, cell was free for text and data but calls were $0.25 or so per minute. Off goes the cell connection and on goes the WiFi. In a bar or hotel or Hostel, I could make a call to the U.S.A. for no charge and it was clear as a bell. Same for traveling in the US. No cell service, no problem, find a McDonald Restaurant and have at it.
Even worked well in Cancun where I used a Burger King WiFi.
