Here in New York, the buyer has the title, but the bank is listed as a Lienholder. When the bank is paid in full, the bank issues a ‘release of lien’. Take that and the title in and you can get a new title or sell to whomever you want. If a bank is dumb enough to give you money without being listed as a lienholder, that’s thieir tough luck.
