3985 is the only UP locomotive that I have yet seen. She came through here on the CSX pulling the Santa Clause Special in, I believe, 1992. Somehow, I did not know of it. I only became aware of it after hearing a steam whistle for several minutes while working on my JD 730DWES in the barn. I was able to grab my camera and make it to the tracks about 1/4 mile from my house before she arrived. Serendipity.
She was accelerating out of town getting ready to hit the 12+ mile hill out of the Ohio River valley in about 3 or 4 miles. I was surprised by how quite and smooth she was.
I plan to visit the UP steam shops in Cheyenne next summer.
