The essence is traction with reduced slippage (wheel spin). Heavier loads can be pulled with 5% wheel spin, but that reduces the efficiency. loading a 2wd, and adjusting the weight to be able to have balance placing most weight on the rears can be effective, but it requires the finals to handle all the power, where as the articulated design spreads it between two axles, and runs in one set of tire tracks. Farmers always want to pull as much as they possible can. There is a real advantage in efficiency in not slipping the tires and going faster. All drive trains have limits. Loading a tractor with weight and gearing down to pull a bigger, deeper, wider implement may be about break even with acres/hr, but will be less fuel efficient at the same engine load and wear the drive train more than higher speed and less wheel spin.
