Just a note here so I'm not answering (or trying to answer) David's question.
When I took high school automotives back in the early 60's, we learned about both generators and the newer alternators (which I think Chrysler might have been the first major North American auto manufacturer to use them). I remember our shop teacher (Mr. Claperton) teaching us that an alternator is simply one kind/type of "generator", so it in fact was a generator by basic definition where a generator was a device which converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. Nowadays of course, we use the terms separately depending on what parts are fixed in place and which parts are spinning I believe.
Sort of like the terms rectangle and square. While we all have our own definition of each one, a square is actually a specific type of rectangle by definition.
