I don't have 6v batteries. However I have seen electric wheelchairs 24v using two 12v batteries and one 12v will have reverse polarity. This is caused by one of the 12v is on it way out. When wheelchair is being used, the weak battery goes to 0v. Then the better battery still pushes electrons through it reversing its polarity.
Yes you can recharge it and the correct polarity comes back, but in the case of the wheelchair it's time to replace both batteries.
I would charge your 6v with a small 6v manual charger. Slow charging seems to work better for me.
