I have had instances where I needed a tractor and looked hard at what might fit. Recently I have been in the hospital twice with long convalescent times at home. So being a tractor guy I think about what were some of the optimum tractors over time and why. I thought I would throw this question out and see what your opinions are.
For my current way of thinking I come up with John Deere 50 and 55 series and the Case 96 Series.
Some of my criteria are:
Reputatable Tractor Companys, much experiece. These tractors still stand out today. I have some experience with them. Prior to Tier IV. PTO HP 90-130, seems like a range for a manuverable tractor you can get some work done in all seasons. Pushed Technology in what I would call a utilitarian way. Had comfortable cabs, air, heat. Beyond what I would call experimental electronics (The incorportation of Electronics had matured some.) but before it got a little crazy. Closed Ckt Hydraulics.
When I was on the farm growning up we had MH 44's and 444's and Allis 190XT and Allis 200. None of these are in my Go To list but I cannot help wonder what Massey Harris would have done had they survived. My Dad wanted to pick up an IH 806 but the dealer was way to errogant to even bring one out to try. The Allis guy did.
It is also interesting to me these tractors span that range of time with great business and technical turmoil in the farm equipment business. I don't know alot about Case but from the little I know it seemed like Case might of been about to really hit their stride. The guys on the Case Forum are an interesting bunch. Maybe that is what keeps Case-IH going.
So what do you believe to be some of the Greats from That Period, late 20th century? Ford/New Holland must of had a seires or Model that stood out. Massey Fergusen????? I have a lot of respect for Oliver watching them at Tractor Pulls. I know nothing of Minneapolis Moline.
