One of my M's has the same problem. The problem could be one or both of two things. A: the 5th gear is just worn down to knubs since people rarely if ever waited til they were stopped to shift into road gear and doing so, ground the gears smooth. The other factor could be worn out bearings. Like Doc said, get the manual and get help (the parts ARE heavy). And while you're in the tranny you might as get 13 gallons of gear lube (the official M tranny capacity) since I'd be willing to bet that your gear oil is probably "stock" with "aftermarket" water, dirt, and the old chunks of what's left of your 5th gear. Get your kid brother's toothbrush or something and clean it all out, since there's no point of putting that clean oil into a dirty tranny if you don't have to. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
