To: Jeff Ishee,WSVA Radio. I live in Medina,Ohio about 12 miles from this explosion and have attended this fair since I was a child every year. The steam engine that exploded was a Case, The owners of this particular tractor were killed in this explosion.According to the news conference I watched this morning at 7:30 E.S.T.,No Charges will be filed in this accident according to the County Sheriff, due to the owners being deceased. Four(4) people were killed,49 were injured, and transported to 6 area hospitals. Life flight helicopters responded as far away as Pittsburg, Pa. plus surrounding ambulance services.Of the injured it is reported that the injuries range from burns to broken bones, when the explosion occured it was reported that metal scrappnel and hot oil caused the majority of the injuries. Metal fragments were found as far as 120 yards (360 feet) from the site of the explosion. The injured range from toddlers in strollers to the elderly. The explosion also occured while the 2 police officers were citing the driver of this tractor for driving it on a paved public street, probably due to the steel wheels causing damage to the pavement, these types of antique tractors are usually brung in on trailers. The 2 police officers were injured by scrappnel,it is reported that what saved thier lives is that they were wearing thier bullet proof vests.Scrappnel was imbedded in thier vests and when the vests were removed a clear outline could be seen where the vests protected the bodies vital areas. As far as the other people injured only a couple at last report are in serious condition, but not life threatening, some have been treated and released. It was also reported that there might have been other people injured, but they might have left the Fair grounds on thier own without seeking help. The people that were killed were also the owners of the tractor and reported that probably the last of the expertise in this area as far as steam powered tractors go. Speculation is that if there was a mechanical failure, this occurance could have been worst if this explosion would have happened during regular fair days when there would have been many more people around, and they do run these steam tractors for demonstration puposes, This explosion happened last night at 6:30 E.S.T.,and the fair opens today 7-30-01, which it did, but a couple hours late.I hope this will be of help to you. Sincerely, Elmer Apinis. Any questions:Phone:330-278-7377 or Fax 330-278-2508.

Product Review: Black Tire Paint - by Staff. I have been fortunate in that two of my tractors have had rear tires that were in great shape when I bought the tractor. My model "H" even had the old style fronts with plenty of tread. My "L" fronts were mismatched Sears Guardsman snow tires, which I promptly tossed. Well, although these tires were in good shape as far as tread was concerned, they looked real sad. All were flat, but new tubes fixed that. In addition to years and years of scuffing and fading, they had paint splattered on
