Quoting from my 1903 engineers handbook,"The crownsheet is at the top of the firebox, just under the water of the boiler,so long as it is covered with water, the water will conduct the heat away, if however, it is not covered with water, but only steam, it quickly becomes overheated, since steam does not conduct the heat away like water does. the great danger is that the thin layer of water near this overheated crown sheet will suddenly be turned into a great volume of steam and cause an explosion." The reports I have read of the Ohio tragedy say the tractor was backing into position, if the water was low and ran away from the crown sheet and sloshed back when it stopped, a great explosion could of resulted from this. Not knowing any more details, I hope this settles a few questions some folks here have. John in Nebr.
