Well this is OT, but interesting. Our next door neighbor runs an informal cat rescue in a small building on the other side of the fence about 150 feet from the back door of our house in town. She acquires these cats in various ways and it has long been suspect that not all of these ways were strictly legal. I have tried to be a good neighbor over the years and have even helped her with her cats. When the building was broken into and cats taken, it was me who tracked down the kids who did it. When one of her cats was shot in the woods behind the house, it was me who went back and talked to the neighbor who did it.
Four years and about a month ago my daughter's kitten disappeared from the yard. She had adopted the kitten for purposes of taking it to school with her as a companion in her apartment and had paid the adoption fees and vet fees etc. Both our girls were extremely upset as it was likely the kitten had been taken by coyotes. Posters were put up around the neighborhood and flyers were taken door to door. The cat lady became suspect because she would not open her door more than a crack and was verbally rude about it. My daughter stood crying on her porch while the woman denied she had seen the kitten. We did not believe her, so my girls started watching her on Facebook.
Fast forward four years. A few times a year the girls would check in on the cat lady's activities including following links to friends pages. Then one day a picture of a cat appeared. Our kitten had VERY distinctive markings and this adult cat was identical. The person who had posted the picture was the sister of our crazy neighbor. Many other pictures were found. The info was taken to the District Attorney who forwarded it to the Michigan State Police. The sister lived in another county and animal control had to be involved so it took two months to obtain a search warrant to seize the cat. This AM the warrant was executed, animal control scanned the cat and the chip that my daughter had had implanted four years ago revealed that it was indeed our missing kitten. This morning he is back at home acting like he never left. Seems happy to be here. The woman who had the cat, after being questioned by MSP, has admitted that she got it from her sister who, as I already explained, was well aware that it was our cat. I had NO idea my kids were investigating this matter until a couple months ago when I gave my stamp of approval on reporting it to the police. People amaze me...neighbor, kids, cops...really amazing. :)
