I think you should be okay using the gun you have now, I shot some clear coat with my old Wal-mart gun and with some practice it worked pretty good. I don't think there is much difference between a conventional gun and a HVLP as far as paint usage, I think the gravity feed feature on my Platinum saves more than the HVLP part of it since I can use all the paint I pour into the cup. Are you talking about a supplied air source system? I have a Hobbyair 1 that I paid $360 for but I wish I would have gotten the Hobbyair 2 that I think is about $450. The Hobbyair 2 has 80ft of hose instead of 40 that the 1 has and 40ft isn't quite long enough. Below is a link to the site where I bought my Hobbyair and my Sharp Platinum, it has both prices and service that beat anything here locally. I think a gallon of red PPG Omni line single stage urethane with the hardner and reducers would run around $140, but when reduced your going to have a lot of paint. I actually haven't used single stage urethane yet but hopefully if I have time I will use it on our 826 yet this summer.
