This old house is the same way. Dad buried some old used four inch gas pipe back in the 50s,cemented over some of it,some is hanging out over a crawl space. He used everything from 3/4 inch galvanized to garden hose to drain sinks and stuff in to it. He just burned holes in it with an arc welder to run things in the top of it. When we remodeled the kitchen and bathroom,I went to inch and a half PVC from the tub and sinks,but I ran them in to that old steel pipe. Later on,it rusted through and it's back up under the house where it's about impossible to get to. I split some four inch PVC,slathered it with silicone and clamped it around the pipe,but it still dripped.
I ended up splitting some three inch and drove it inside of it. We've had trouble with that bathtub drain every since. I don't know if I drove a bunch of rust up inside of it or what happened.
