Had the same similar problem on my MH. It was the retainer ring that holds the ball swivel in position under the boot that came loose. I was able to lift the shift lever a little as the retainer wasn't holding. I took the inspection plate off and repositioned the end of the shift lever back in it's shift block on the rail and put in a new retainer. It may be you have worn contact points on the end of your lever or your shift blocks are worn. You can rebuild the end or the blocks with hard facing welding rod.
