Higher engine speeds & operating at 80% promote better fuel efficiency & less unburned fuel to contaminate the lube oil & soot up ports. The combustion chamber pressure & temps are higher in a diesel or gas operated at rpms between peak torque & HP is achieved. Therefore better fuel efficiency & more turbulance in the manifold/intake ports & combustion chambers. Keeps the air/fuel mixture mixed & evenly distributed in gasoline engines. Two cylinder Deere manuals stated "operate the tractor at full rated rpm & 80% load". The new generation were to be operated at 1500 to 2200 rpm & at 80% rated load. Idled back & lugging an engine is asking for trouble.
