Hi, First thing is there is no such thing as a 1953 Ford 8N. The 8N production ceased in 1952. Secondly, what makes you think that the flywheel ring gear is worn? Have you pulled the starter and looked inside? You sure that it is not the bendix on the starter that is worn? Third thing is that I will never recommend hand cranking over using an electrical start. Although there was a crank with each 8N sold, there was a reason that nearly all of them have been lost or tossed over the last 50 years. Fourth is that it just is not that difficult to split an 8N. I bet you would have a harder time with the new ring gear going on then splitting the tractor. See the site below to ID your N (if indeed you do have one) then determine if it is your ring gear or your bendix and then post your next question on the Ford 9N/2N/8N Board affiliated with this site and you will get all the help you can stand...uh handle... :-)
