I have two hank crankers I mess with. Here is what I do to get them going. The 10-20 International demands that I crank the engine over 2 full revolutions with the mag turned off and the choke on. then I turn off the choke and turn on the mag to the retarded position and set the impulse lever. It starts almost every time on the first pull that way. My F-12 Farmall is quite different. I think the needle valve in the carb seeps some and if I choke it it is flooded right from the begining. To start it I turn on the gas for a couple seconds and then turn it back off. That fills the fuel pump. Then I set the mag at the on and retared position and bring the crank handle up to the 9 oclock position. I stand with my right shoulder in line with the crank handle and keeping my thumb out of the way,just lift the handle 1/4 turn. This way I can "put my back into it". standing like that will keep you out of the way if it kicks back. Never lean over the crank handle!!!!!An old guy down the road got hit in the head by a crank hanle on a farmall regular when he was a kid. The dent he had in his forehead was there until just a few years ago and he is close to his 80s. If youy want to check to see if you will be clear of the crank the grab the crank and spin it backwards and see how close your arms and legs and head is to the handle. If it kicks it will happen so fast you may not have time to react and get out of the way.The best way is to just expect it and keep clear enough so if it does you won't get hit. Here is a list of rules! Always retard the spark when cranking!(this "should" keep it from kicking) Keep your thumb tucked with your other fingers and use only one hand!. Stand so you will be clear if it kicks.Don't lean over the crank handle to turn it!!!!!!it is a good way to loose your teeth or get a concussion. Dont try to spin it like an electric starter! It will start with 1/2 to 1/4 turns if it is going to start at all. Keep the machine in good condition. if everything is wore out you will be cussing everytime you start it. you need good compression and the right amount of fuel in the cylinders. the spark as to arrive at the right time also. Last thing is get ready to grin when it fires up!It is a great feeling to start a big old engine with one hand!
