JayinNY- In regard to your last comment above: The flu virus mutates so fast that it's a guessing game when making up the vaccine. Because of the necessary lead time, they have to guess which strain will show up the following winter. They try to hedge by including two or three strains in one shot, but their record for correctly predicting the actual strain that shows up is not good. Some years back I saw an article about the flu that went around about 10 or 15 years ago, I think it was H1N1. Some hospital, it may have been in Canada, noticed that everyone who came into the ER with the flu had been vaccinated, and no one showed up who had not been vaccinated. This led to the CDC and the Agriculture Dept. doing a study in pigs. The control group was unvaccinated, the other group was vaccinated for flu virus X. Then both groups were exposed to flu virus Y. They said that the vaccinated pigs showed more severe symptoms than the unvaccinated group. That seems to indicate that the vaccine programs the immune system to look for virus X. If virus Y shows up instead, it takes longer for the immune system to recognize it as a threat, which gives the virus a head start.
The bottom line is that a strong immune system is the single most important thing.
