Great that you are interested in a great hobby! This is a very good site with many good folks on it. We are old folks tho, with strong opinions earned the hard way, and we sometimes express them a bit more harshly than necessary. A forgive and move on attitude will serve you well, and be good experience for life. As far as duty goes, for anyone to suggest that someone's sense of duty is better or worse than someone else's based on military service is both arrogant and wrong. There are many ways to serve our community that are every bit as honorable as military service. And none of us even know you or what you intend to do, so to say your sense of duty is more or less is assuming a lot. We also have many duties, on many levels. We have duties to ourself, community, family, home, jobs, even our pets. That you feel a duty to preserve history and old tractors is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.
Again welcome to the club, and keep posting and asking questions. We will try to help however we can.
