Up here in Alberta, all "employees" (at least those having jobs with a company, etc) get vacation or holiday pay, it's legislated by law. Details in the link below but after one year of employment, everyone is entitled to 4% or two weeks of paid holiday starting in year two I think. After four years of that (must be continuous employment with the same company) it jumps up a bit to three weeks. It must have been happening for a long time, the first actual or formal "job" I had with an employer (summer work tearing down buildings) was in the summer of 1961 and at the end of the summer's work, a bit of money was added onto my paycheque and was "holiday pay". I was being paid $1.40 per hour that summer. I remember my dad explaining it to me. He didn't get holiday pay, he was a self-employed door-to-door salesman so really he was sort of working for himself I guess. Never gave it too much thought again until right now reading this post.
