Adjusted for inflation, gasoline is cheaper now than it was in 1968. Considering how fuel efficient vehicles are now, it’s never been cheaper to own and run one. Think about how many miles you got outta your car in 1970, 1990, now. Think about many vehicles your parents owned, how many you owned, and how many your kids own. Owning a vehicle is cheap today. It’s not necessarily a good thing.
We’re in an unusual spot where producers are overproducing because they can. Believe it or not, oil producers would love gasoline to be $4.00 per gallon. Problem is some recent innovations in production have lowered the cost of extraction, or have made otherwise inaccessible oil accessibile. The price will naturally increase due to lack of supply. The question we SHOULD be asking is “what are we doing to prepare for that day?”
