Sounds good in theory but in practice only about 10% of total electricity production in the US is combined wind and solar.
Plus according to the state of MN we get 10.9 % of our electricity from wind and solar, not the 19 claimed in the times story. MT? MT makes a lot of electricity that is sold to eastern states. Only 7% is wind/solar. 39% hydro and 49% coal. Both coal and hydro is under attack. Better figure that hydro is on the way out too. Environmental groups have been successfully suing to force the removal of dams. And yes, they have hydro electric dams in their sights too. So we need a way to generate RELIABLE electricity with enough power for our industries. Preferably a means that is clean. If industry doesn't have enough cheap power here they will move offshore and thousands, maybe millions of Americans will become unemployed. That issue has to be addressed too.
Part of the problem is that they figure that solar and wind will never actually take over. It will supplement. That's all.
All you folks that want to close the coals fired plants and go over to NG? You ready for rate increases? Both in electricity and in home heating? The more demand for NG the more it's going to cost. Supply and demand always makes that happen. You think the gas suppliers have been pushing NG cause they are worried about climate change? Or are they worried about bottom line?
Me I'm a big believer in Nuclear power but that has long term problems too.
