I got my first Versatile tractor in the early 70's,it was a 68 model 125( the one with a 391 Ford truck engine in it). We replaced the tired 391 with a 428 which had really good torque and power, but WOW! would it ever drink gasoline. About that time the local salvage guy had a Detroit diesel 6-71 inline six avalible for a very cheap price. We measured everything and decided that if we extended the front frame and hood 6 inches,we could make it fit,also called the engineering dept at Versitile to see if they thought the driveline would take the extra torque.They said "go for it" It took us a couple of weeks to fit the engine and repaint everything so it looked good. well, we got it in the field and found out we now had a lot more power than traction. back home to fit a dual wheel kit. 8 18.4 38 tires with cloride in half of them really made it hook up, we could pull 30 ft chisel plow with 18 inch sweeps 6 mph. Put it to work and all was well for about 100 hrs when a bearing on the top transmission shaft gave up from the engines 600+ ft pounds of torque. Replaced the bearing and 100 hrs later it failed again. I called Versatiles engineering dept again and explaned my problem. They scratched their heads a bit then said that the late production 145 transmissions used a double row ball bearing to replace the single row bearing in my old 125.End of transmission problem. We ran it for the next 10-12 years as our main tillage tractor and was trouble free. Later we upgraded to a newer 4wd tractor with more creature comforts like a tight quiet cab with AC. The old repowered 125 was sold to the guy next door who still uses it for his heavy tillage tractor. Sometimes when he is working it I like to park near by just to listen to the 2 cycle drone of that old 6-71.Not many of them left running anymore and I always liked the sound

After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
