I have 2 tractors will start without a choke. As soon as it fires, it needs some choke to keep running. I have other tractors won't fire without a choke. I have some lawn mowers I leave the cover off breather so I can spray a squirt of starter fluid on air filter. Fires right off and needs little to no choke. Using starter fluid saves starter from cranking and cranking or it saves me from pulling on starter rope.
Every engine has it quirks when it comes to starting.
