It depends on your application. If I was using my tractor in some kind of commercial application I'd probably be out of business by now. That would be because my competition with modern equipment could do the work in half or a third of the time. But I'm just mowing two acres and plowing driveway in winter. My '49 JD A has a 3-point and PTO and that's all I need. It doesn't even have to be live power or hydraulics. I'm not in a hurry and I get the job done. Now my neighbor has about a $4000 JD lawn mower for summer and a blade on his ATV (I don't know what it cost) for his driveway. I've got less in my whole outfit that he does in his lawn mower. Plus my blade and my mower are both twice the width of his. What's the tradeoff? His stuff generally doesn't break down. That's what he needs because he doesn't want to work on it. I kind of like working on stuff so my equipment (ok, toys) is right for me. In dollars I'm way ahead. In effort he's ahead. Who's better off? Neither of us - we both have the right equipment for our applications.
