The com got that reputation from two things, the first was when they were introduced in 58 there was a flaw and Case had to recall them. That's where the unreliable rep came from. But once they we're fixed and til the end of production they were the toughest system available. There is virtually no way to damage them, and other than the occasional seal they just don't have issues. About the only way to cause failure is to run them out of oil.
The other thing that hurt them was again with the early ones you could not feather the clutch. It works just like an automatic in a car, let the clutch out at idle, give it gas and go. But for those used to giving a tractor gas then letting out the clutch they would get the same thing as dropping your car into drive at half throttle. Case fixed that so you can feather the clutch when they started the comfort king series.
