Head swap between flathead engines - A QUESTION ????

I have a flathead 4 cylinder engine that has a cracked head from freezing. It might be repairable but meanwhile I can get what appears to be a sound replacement head, but it is for a smaller version of the same engine block. My engine block has a bore of 3 1/4" and the replacement head has a bore of 2 3/4". All the head bolt locations and water passage openings are the same, it's just that the combustion dome on the smaller head is 1/2" smaller in diameter. This would be 1/4" in on the whole circumference of the combustion chamber. The valve recesses in the good head appear to match those in the original block. If everything but the bore matches up, can I expect to use the smaller head and have it function OK? I guess I might get an increase in compression ratio is that correct? My neighbour says that all the heads on small block Chevy engines are fully interchangeable, and that covers quite a range of sizes. Anyone out there have any answers to my questions?
