On my farm i have two 3/4 ton HD chevy diesel pu's, one Dodge, and one Ford. My brother just sold his Power Stroke Ford about a month ago. The chevys are oldest, the Fords are newest. Here's my take on all of them. (not includeing maintance and normal wear itoms) My oldest Chevy (manual trans.), has 196,000 miles on it. It's needed a couple injection pumps, 3 starters, water pump (45.00), and i just put a clutch in it as the old one chattered a little. This truck still runs fine, and is reliable. Second Chevy, (auto trans) has 100,000 on it, and has needed a transmission (turbo 400), a bearing and seal in transfer case, and maybe a starter? I can't remember for sure? Dodge is one ton dually with Cummins, 70,000 miles. It's needed a thermostat, and a U-joint under warr., the 5 speed Getrag trans. blew, so i replaced it with a NV4500, The computer wasn't plugged in properly, but it made it out of warr.!! It had a bad squeak/rattle that the dealer never found, but went away on it's own. My brothers 3/4 ton HD Power Stroke had 69,000 miles on it when he sold it. It needed a water pump ($545.00 for parts alone!), glow plug comtroler ($110.00), Glow plug problems (did you know they are UNDER the valve covers??), and some other small things, then the entire front end needed a rebuild! It was going to cost over $700.00, so he unloaded it! My FRAWD's a one ton, It's been in the shop two times for front end problems, once for squeaks and rattles, two times for the interior lights comeing on by them selves, (runs the batt. dead over night) and door locks not working right. Once for rear end seal leaks. As i write this it's in the shop cause the engine misfires, and sometines quits. Two days so far, and they don't know what is wrong with it!! I hope it's not like my neighbors, as he had that problem for several years, untill Ford finally found a crack (defect) in the block that was causeing it all! What truck do i climb in when i have a real load to pull?? (dozer) The Dodge, it out pulls the others, and is best on fuel doing it!! It's easily the best diesel in a pu! There's nothing like low end torque on a hill!! What truck do i like the best to drive?? The old Chevy! It's been one tough truck!! I've pulled some huge loads with it!! It's just under powered by todays standards! As for the ford, it's my last!!! Too many problems, and the power stroke is too expensive to have around!! Actually, the whole truck is getting to expensive to have around! What am i buying next time? A Chevy with a gas engine. I'll keep the Dodge around to pull the big loads. Robert

12-Volt Conversions for 4-Cylinder Ford 2000 & 4000 Tractors - by Tommy Duvall. After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
