That is a very good question Robert. Most brand new gas engine's from factory are filled with a break-in oil. I would think a diesel would be the same. A new or rebuilt gas engine should have an oil change at about 1000 miles. Then go to a normal mileage to do future changes. I am not sure who dumps the initial first oil in engine (whether it is engine manufacturer or automaker). An engine manufacturer can recommend whatever oil they want (especially if they don't have a contract). I'm sure an automaker would be subject to have to recommend the brand name they have a contract with. A simular situation would arise if an engine manufacturer had a contract. This would explain why an engine manufacturer and an automaker may verywell have different recomended brand names. In other words, you wouldn't have a contract selling oil to a big company without the stipulation that they -were- recomending your oil. I would be willing to bet that research has been done in both cases to make sure that both oils are safe to run in the same engine. You wouldn't risk your buisness by not researching. But the thing is, people that go to parts store to get oil and the parts guy asks them "What oil do you need?" and the customer says "Give me what you got." then no research has been done and they may well be getting a none exceptable oil whether it is an off brand or weight. An off brand don't have to manufacture there oil the same as a contracted oil manufacturer. It may have a tottally different ditergent in it or who knows what all. I'm sure a contracted oil has guidlines as to how the oil is refined and what all is in it. An off brand is not under those guidelines. If you have a contract for G.M. you can't just make oil however you want and exspect to have a contract with G.M. renewed. My advice to you on whether to use engine manufacturers or automakers recomended oil would be to ask the engine mechanic at the dealership or call the engine manufacturer and see if there is a difference. I bet they will say both is exceptable. But just dumping in any old brand may or may not be sufficient. I have never seen an engine that has the recommendation that says "Engine is tolerable to all brands of oil, or all weights" and I bet I never will for either brands, or weights.

When Push Comes to Shove - by Dave Patterson. When I was a “kid” (still am to a deree) about two I guess, my parents couldn’t find me one day. They were horrified (we lived by the railroad), my mother thought the worst: "He’s been run over by a train, he’s gone forever!" Where did they find me? Perched up on the seat of the tractor. I’d probably plowed about 3000 acres (in my head anyway) by the time they found me. This is where my love for tractors started and has only gotten worse in my tender 50 yrs on this “green planet”. I’m par
