Sara,

The power steering issue may be of greater importance than you think. The older fords without power steering could require a great deal of torque to turn the wheels in certain conditions (rough ground, muddy field or barn lot) and could also deliver quite a jolt. The older tractors without power steering have broken more than a few thumbs and wrists. For a person who has not had amputations, the contact made by the thighs, legs and feet help provide the anchoring of the body while exerting force with the arms. I am assuming that your skid steer loader uses two levers to control steering, direction of travel and braking. On a tractor you may need to use the clutch, brake(s) and steer at the same time. If any one of these actions takes all of your strength the other actions will suffer. My earlier suggestion about the International 574/674 was based on the ease of steering, power brakes and design of the operator’s area. You should look for a tractor where the clutch and brake peddles pivot from the front and press down rather than forward. These can easily be modified so that a lever will pull toward you with a short throw instead of having to be pushed forward a long distance. Do you use some sort of harness to anchor your lower body in the seat for safety purposes? If you get a tractor that is hard to steer when you hit a bump, rut or mud hole you may find yourself bouncing around and using the strength of your arms to hold on rather than to steer. My wife works for an organization called Living Independence For Everyone (LIFE). Its purpose is to assist differently-abled individuals in achieving independent living through the coordination of assistance and educational programs. I do not know what state you live in, but there should be a LIFE office covering your area. LIFE is a nonprofit organization funded by grants.
