The batteries on my 86 series IH are on the long side of 14 years old now. At this point it’s a game to see how long they will last. They started it at zero the other day when I had forgotten to plug it in, so they must have a little life left in them.
On my Deere tractors I hook a maintainer or charger to the battery lug on the starter to charge or maintain both batteries. All of those are series 6 volt batteries. The IH has parallel 12 volt and there no way to get to the starter lug without making myself a muddy mess.
Can I hook the maintainer to the hot lug on the back of the alternator? I’m not talking about charging it or boosting it from there. Just something to keep the batteries fully charged if I don’t use it for a few days. When it gets really muddy I chore with the FWA machine and I bet it gets muddy when all of this thaws...
