If you are talking about the stub shaft that bolts into the bottom of the housing. It looks like there is a bearing in the picture you posted. Why can't it be welded up to size then turned back to the original size for the new bearing. There are thrust washers that go in the top and bottom to shim the clearance so the hub side of the axle is in alignment with the axle shaft coming out from the differential. If that is off the axle with either break or ware the hub splines rapidly due to the misalignment. I have an old IH truck that has a drive axle much like that made by Rockwell back in the 60's , it had those short pin like pieces with a brass bushing for a bearing. I just welded them back up and turned them back to the size of the new bushing. Fit good after that and could keep it in the road. It had about a 2 inch pin though.
