The 165 diesel I fixed up for the State Ag Museum is having starter problems. Went to crank it and the battery was a bit low. would not turn fast enough to start. When you let go of the key, the starter will keep turning the engine. It may turn for 5 seconds and sometimes longer. Have a master switch in the battery cable to stop it also. Put a new solenoid on it today and it made no difference. Took the switch wire off the starter and used a screwdriver and it still did it. The solenoid is what pushes the gear back to engage the ring gear. Does the starter gear have threads in it that will help kick it back to disengage the solenoid when it cranks? I did not want to crank it and ruin the starter by having the engine turning it. Thanks, Richard in NW SC
