Not sure I understand your comment, but -- if you rotated the engine (while the pump was off) to adjust the valves -- it could be out of time. The pump turns 1/2 engine speed and it could be 1/2 off but I would be surprised you got it started. One tooth off could cause a problem like you have. Sounds like you need to pull the valve cover and get back on #1 compression TDC (both valve levers free). Then go thru the pump timing check - whatever that is for your engine and pump.
