dsr proseries. The bigger one is very heavy though it does 12 and 24 volt jumps. Used by most of the auctioneers down here for tractor row starting. It is switch activated so it will work on a dead battery. Good: will start most anything no matter. If old battery is shorted, just jump straight to starter. Bad: the big one is very heavy.
The others have a safety relay to activate them and the bad battery must have some voltage to activate the safety relay or they will not work.
Or they have a little lithium battery that only works if the old battery is a just a bit weak as there is very little (limited) capacity in the small lithium battery.
