We used to do exactly what you are talking about when converting old 6V chevrolets to 12V. It will work for a while. The little generator has the fields pumped up to make the 14.2 Volt output needed for 12 V. The generator is pretty well maxed out and is hard on regulator contacts and resistors because of excess field current draw.The best fix is an alternator conversion, or if you want it to apear stock use a 12V generator.
