We're talking 1960's tractors here. The 720 / 730 still were using 1930's two cylinder cross motors with overcenter hand clutch and some nice tinwork. The 560 was a new model with 6 cylinder, TA, and had provision for a 30 gal hyd reservoir - in the final drive housing. Until a suitable fluid was developed and some pressure lubrication was added, there were initial problems but all 460 / 560's received a field upgrade. As mentioned, a turbo could be added to the 560d and the final drive performed fine. Deere eventually recognized the need for a smoother engine and a modern design, so we are not really talking apples and apples here. The 10 series with either a power shift or syncromesh tranmission was a great leap forward - IH didn't follow but developed hydostatic drive which was not a good decision for tillage type requirements. It saves companies a lot of tooling and test money not be first with the new stuff!
