Ammeter not charging and tractor cuts out

The ammeter on my Farmall Super A shows no charge. After I jumpstart it, it will run only a few minutes before it stops. How can I tell whether the problem is in the generator vs. the regulator? On a tractor with a generator, will a bad battery cause the ammeter to show no charge? Could the cutting out problem be related to the charging system problem? I thought the cutting out problem was the coil, so I changed it, but it did not solve the problem. I also cleaned the fuel system's strainers but this made not difference. Does a tractor with a generator require a charged battery to keep running? Thanks for
