Ok removed the lock pin and unscrewed the center gland (10 complete turns out to remove it). I found there was no washer or felt seal underneath it. Instead, the felt washer was just a donut that went around the shaft, and it gets sandwiched between the shaft and the drive shaft flange. Not exactly sure what holds it in. You can see in the last photo the seal is pretty much worn flat.
