I run a couple of HD pickups/tractors with dual fuel Gasoline and propane. No way to really check mileage on propane as I fill my own tanks with no meter on the pump. Gasoline has 113,000 btu per gal while propane has 91,333. By going by tank capacity I do not think mileage drops as much as the btu difference would indicate and I can't tell a difference in power while pulling heavy trailers. Possibly the propane carburation is doing a better job of using the avalible btu's? A couple of other things I like about running on propane are the fuel injection like smoothness and no choke needed instant cold idle. Also if your air cleaner system is doing a good job, your engine will last nearly forever on dry propane. propane enters the engine as a dry gas,so you get none of the cylinder wall washing like you do on a cold gasoline or diesel engine. A line from a propane conversion manual says that the rings will die from metal fatigue before they wear out on a propane engine with a good air cleaner. On one tractor with a 454 chev repower running on propane, I had to replace a head gasket and found no cylinder wall ridge with 6000 hrs on this automotive engine.
