The starting current can be very high amperage. 150 to 250 amps (more in the winter). The charging current can also be in the 35 to 50 amp category. A connection from the Battery to the engine (at the starter mount bolt) is fundamental. A ground from the engine to the chassis only carries lights and external accessories. Smaller amps, but very important to link with a woven copper strap or cable. Jim
