When nothing is in writing, it's impossible to prove any wrongdoing in a court of law, but these people lie about the quality of the materials they use, lie about the quality of the job they perform, sometimes even lie about completing the job, hoping you won't look before they have cash in hand and truck in road.
Normally when you deal with a contractor, you get everything in writing down to the last detail. That way you have recourse should you pursue it if the contractor does not make good.
In fact all these places you claim are only out to "fleece" people provide a means of recourse, in that you can take the item back for a refund within a reasonable timeframe. These travelers provide no such recourse.
