It "can't" stop. Take away all the guns, people can still make homemade explosives. Take away that and people can still hunt in packs....also known as gangs. Can (and will) arm themselves with bats, clubs, knives, chains, rocks, and anything else they can get their hands on. And for the lone crazy's out there, they still have their (or someone else's because they stole it) car!
No matter how you cut it, there will always be nut jobs out there who feel they have to "strike out" at the world. Why? Who knows!! But it never ends. And we as a species are powerless to stop it. Every time someone tries, they may (or may not) make one thing better, but in the process make one or more other things worse. The only possible step that follows this is advancing science to the point that they can know from a very young age who is likely to go over the edge at some point, THEN intervene...before the person has actually done anything wrong. ...And where does that lead us as a so-called "humane society"??
We (ALL of us!) need to understand that bad things happen, and NOBODY can change that. Want to end death and have people live forever? Wow, how quickly will we outgrow the planet? Want to stop all crime? Stop all sadness? Stop all pain? ...Then what's the point in living? Life is about having to deal with these hurdles. Our 'rewards' when we succeed are the times when life is good and happy and easy -- but it CANNOT stay that way!
This "war on guns" is simply a tool being used by those wishing to gain power and control. Greed may also be a factor. Some people truly want to do a good deed, but they enlist the help from others who don't care about doing good, but instead have their own agenda.
Now, want a factual, historical example that what I say is true? Look at the Roman Empire. At one point, it stretched from Africa all the way to far northern Europe. And if I'm not mistaken, there were no guns during that time.
The madness will never end -- it just changes form.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery.
